Helping Nervous Kids Feel Ready for Halloween
Take the unknown out of Halloween! For many children, Halloween is exciting because it is different from the everyday, but all of that change can feel overwhelming for some. If your child is nervous about Halloween, try previewing the experience ahead of time. Practice wearing their costume, look at pictures of family members dressed up in previous years, and talk about what Halloween is and what they can expect. For young children, the line between imagination and reality can still feel blurry, so something that seems obviously pretend to an adult can feel genuinely scary to a child. Having a plan for taking a break, checking in with your child throughout the evening, or heading home if needed can help make Halloween feel more predictable and manageable for everyone!
